Winter Maintenance Tips for Commercial Roofing Systems

Roof maintenance is essential, even in the winter. Experienced roofing professionals can help you assess your roof for any damage and then can help to complete the necessary repairs before the next harsh winter hits. Here are some tips to ensure a thorough inspection of your roof that will help you keep your roof in pristine condition:

Tip #1: Check for holes or cracks.

Take a close look at your roof, especially around vents and other openings in the structure and look for signs of wear and tear that may indicate leaks, such as:

  • Water damage
  • Mold growth
  • Snow build-up

If you see any of these issues on your roof, contact a professional immediately to assess the situation and address any problems.

Tip #2: Remove debris from the roof.

If you don’t remove debris from your roof, it can cause damage to the structure and make future repairs more difficult. Use a ladder to get on top of the structure, then clear out any leaves or branches that have accumulated over time. We recommend wearing gloves and protective clothing to avoid injury while cleaning off your roof.

Tip #3: Check for sagging areas.

Sagging roofing materials are an indication of an underlying problem with the roof, or an issue with the support structure beneath it.

Check around windows and doors for signs of water damage or leaking under your eaves. Visible signs include stains on walls, peeling paint and mold growth in the attic above wet areas.

Tip #4: Look for signs of moisture damage.

If you see mold growth or discoloration (green, black or gray) on the roof surface and/or stains in your attic floor or ceiling. These you could indicate that water is soaking through and into the attic where it can cause significant damage to your building’s structure and contents. If you suspect that this is happening, contact a roofing professional to get it fixed.

A routine inspection and regular maintenance are essential for any roof, especially in harsh winter climates. When you know what to look for, you can more easily spot issues before they become problems.
