Spring is here which brings with it an increased chance of storms and tornados, both of which can produce strong, destructive winds.
According the NOAA National Severe Storms Laboratory, damaging winds are often called “straight-line” winds to differentiate the damage they cause from tornado damage. Damaging winds are classified as those exceeding 50-60 mph. Damage from severe thunderstorm winds account for half of all severe reports in the lower 48 states and is more common than damage from tornadoes. Wind speeds can reach up to 100 mph and can produce a damaging path extending for hundreds of miles.
Why are we sharing this information? Because damaging winds can wreak havoc on your roof. If you think about it, strong, damaging winds can uproot trees and peel away siding or other exterior materials from a building, so why would your roof, which is just as exposed to the weather, be spared?
Your roof is designed to protect your building from the elements. However, damage from harsh winds can result in a minimum of a leaky roof. If your roof succumbs to damage, and as water steadily infiltrates the layers of your roof, you may start to notice wet spots on the ceiling or walls. Now you have a larger, more expensive issue on your hands.
To help prevent the potential of damaging winds causing you costly repairs, we recommend having your roof inspected at least twice a year, preferably in the spring and fall to analyze and prepare for the winter months. Calling a trusted, experienced professional to take care of inspections is critical, due to their extensive knowledge of the roofing industry and being able to discover and reveal potential problems that building owners may not know exist. Not to mention, bringing in a professional allows you to focus on running your business.
